Fascinating Surgeries: Tooth in the eye
First described by Italian professor Benedetto Strampelli in the 1960s,
tooth in the eye” is a fascinating medical procedure that can restore eyesight for people with severe corneal blindness where no other treatment is possible. In stage one of the operation the patient’s tooth is removed and cut into a block, a hole is drilled through it and small lens is fitted inside (the tooth provides an excellent organic encasement for the plastic lens) later the tooth and lens are planted into the patient’s cheek to grow a soft tissue.
In stage two about four month later, the tooth-lens is removed from the cheek, excess soft tissue is removed and the tooth is implanted into the eye, at the end of the operation, light can enter through the cylindrical lens and eyesight is restored!
