Dr.Oweira platform is happy to announce the release of the first original series entitled “Journey through a Healthy colon”.
It is located just below the waist where it is joined to the end of the small intestines, and continues to consist of the ascending, the transverse, the descending and the sigmoid colon, and finally the rectum.
Measuring about 1.5 meters, the colon is responsible for passing the stool filled with bacteria out of the body. Unlike the small intestines, the colon does not absorb any of the remaining nutrients from the food. Its main purpose is to absorb fluids and process waste products to rid the body from the leftovers that it no longer needs.
Eating healthy is always the best advice for your overall health. However, having a low-calorie high-fiber diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables is essential for the health of the colon. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and avoid consuming lots of processed meats as those are found to be linked to colon cancer.
If you have constant symptoms such as bloating, gas or pain, or if you experience a persistent change in your bowel habits, like diarrhea or constipation for example, then your colon might not be working the way it should, and it will be a good idea to check with your healthcare provider about the health of your colon.
